I’ve got a great new idea for all my blogging sisters! (maybe a couple of brothers too). Watch this little video first:
- The economy is dismal and only getting worse.
- Natural disasters are happening more and more often.
- Food shortages are occurring everywhere on this planet, even here in the good ol’ U.S.A.
- The prophet says so (Although if you are not LDS you probably don’t care about that)
So here’s what we’re going to do! Every week you go to the store, right? Maybe just for a gallon of milk, but you go. Each week our plan will be to buy a three month supply of ONE ITEM. That’s it! Not a big deal!
We all could store more food. How much money do we spend on eating out? Or on video games, DVD’s for the kids, or getting nails done? None of us have an excuse for not buying and storing more food. So let’s start storing stuff we all use. I’ll pick things that are family-friendly, but feel free to make substitutions. This might be a great activity for Family Home Evening (make a list with everyone’s input on what foods you actually eat, quantities, etc.)
I want to make this as quick and painless as possible so although you could buy some of this stuff at Costco or the church Cannery, the idea is to be EASY. So just pick this stuff up when you are at the grocery store. Also, small cans and packages are easier to store and rotate. Yes, a 2 gallon bottle of cooking oil is cheaper, but what a pain to drag that thing out if you are making a cake and just need one tablespoon. Better to get two or three regular-sized bottles. Get the idea?
Come on friends!
Let’s start on preparedness TODAY!
No more excuses!
Each Sunday I will be listing a new item to be purchased that week. If you get super jazzed and want to buy more, go for it. We’re just going to do baby steps, though, so we don’t get overwhelmed.
I’m really excited about this. I’m praying that those of you who are lacking will use this as a way to get started. As mothers we need to take the feeding of our families seriously.
Who’s with me?
Is that video a commercial? Well, I am proud to say that I finally got my year’s supply of wheat and some of the other basics. but like that video, I need to fill it in with actual stuff we will eat. So I’m in!
by the way, you need to comment on my blog more. you’ve slipped to like 6th place in the “who loves me” list.
well, if it comes down to getting my nails filled or feeding kids, those kids are gonna have to go to my mom’s.
alright. i like the “baby steps” concept. make the list. i will follow. don’t make me have to think too hard.
I’m in…I may give you a shout out on my blog and have some of my sista friends join in too if that’s okay with you.
Hope you had a great time with the family!
It’s like you are speaking directly to me! I’m in!
Anyone and everyone is invited to join up!
Bless you. This is perfect. I can’t wait!
I like this idea! I’ve been struggling to figure out how to get our 3 month supply of food we normally eat. I’ve got the pasta, the rice and cereal…but we are seriously lacking in every other area. I’m in!
I saw your shout out for Harlene to fess up, so I thought I would tease you even more. I found your blog from her post about the food storage help. Thank you by the way, and 4 boxes of 42oz oats are on my list for the next grocery store trip. But, yes, Harlene is one of the coolest and funniest women I have met, and I’ve only known her through my sister and then blogging… (if that made any sense?) I like her tons and wish I could hang out with her everyday but she lives across the country from me. She’s cool and so is your blog. The video was perfect! Thanks again, I’ll be back!
okay, i’m joining the party late, but i’m in. i’ll keep you posted jennie!
I too am joining you late but what a super idea! I am the Family Home Food Production Specialist for our ward so this will really help me try to get people prepared!
I am joining late, so I am starting hopefully with my girlfriends on my blog…we will use yours as a guide-We are starting this next week as week 1. Thanks for making this easy! 😉
This is the greatest idea for blog posts. Way great. I bought 30 bags of chocolate chips today as my raincheck was going to expire. Not the most nutritious–okay, probably the worst–but when I need some I can spend that money on…chili and stew! Yay.
Thanks for reading my blog, I love readers and new comments, they make my day! I am so glad that I found this again. I have used up much of my three month supply these last couple of months and am finally in a position to start building it up again. I love your ideas about what to get, I just kind of went crazy and bought random things when I did it but this has some thought put into it. Thanks for the help, I can’t wait to get started, though it will probably take me a while to get caught up with you!
WOW!! This is EXACTLY what I’ve been needing to see… A week by week map for this stuff!! Getting a 3 month supply of food is on my “baby bucket list” I’m going to refer here for ideas… And since you live in Austin I can ask where you got some of this stuff too! I’m THRILLED!!!
